Britain and Ireland set Ulster framework plan: proposals to guide peace talks

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister John Major and Ireland's Prime Minister John Bruton outlined a plan on Feb 22, 1995, that would establish a semi-autonomous legislative body in Northern Ireland and other enact other provisions to reduce British rule. Unionists opposed many of the plan's proposals.

IRA bomb kills two, injures 100 in London; British prime minister demands return to cease-fire

Article Abstract:

The IRA broke its 18-month cease fire on Feb 9, 1996, when it claimed responsibility for a London, UK, bombing which killed two people. Major subsequently cut off all negotiations with Sinn Fein and denounced the renewed violence. He also called for elections to be held in Ulster.

Ulster document leak stirs row

Article Abstract:

Protestants in Northern Ireland were angered when a confidential document detailing peace negotiations between the Irish Republican Army and the UK was leaked to the press on Feb 1, 1995. The document suggested that the UK was willing to cede its claim to Northern Ireland.
