UK firm Hanson is set to establish a strong presence in the Australian building materials market following its purchase of Pioneer International. The deal will also give Hanson exposure to a number of other markets, including Israel and Spain.

The board of Howard Smith has agreed a hostile takeover bid from Wesfarmers. Institutional investors have been attracted by the combination of Howard Smith's Hardwarehouse business with Wesfarmers' Bunnings Warehouses. Wesfarmers has also expressed interest in Howard Smith's distribution of Blackwoods industrial products.

The unconfirmed reports of the merger of General Property Trust (GPT) with Lend Lease/Westfield Group or Stockland are raising the stock prices of these companies on bourses. The shareholders of GPT have to decide whether they would like to sell their shareholding to either of these companies when the deal materializes or to retain their shares.
