Business starts during the transition in Hungary

Article Abstract:

The development and status of new business ventures in Hungary was studied by examining the country's greeting card industry. This industry was selected because the exact number of firms was known, it was already established during the Communist regime and its performance can be compared to the performance of state-owned firms. Owners and officials of 10 firms which accounted for 90%-95% of the industry's market share were interviewed. The study on the greeting card industry revealed that the private firms were more dynamic than their state-owned counterparts, which were burdened by institutional contraints, uncertainty and managerial weaknesses.
