H&R Block plans spinoff of its CompuServe unit; attempt to 'unlock' value might be a little late, some analysts contend

Article Abstract:

H&R Block announces plans to divest its CompuServe online information service, in an effort to increase CompuServe's flexibility and revenue as an independent firm. Analysts have long suggested that CompuServe is hampered by H&R's controlling interest, unable to meet the demands of a tempestuous and quickly changing marketplace. The Feb 1996 repeal of government regulations barring RBOCs and long-distance telephone companies from competing as online services will surely increase competition and further reduce once large industry profit margins. CompuServe's steady loss of market share to America Online, and its diminishing operating profit suggest to some analysts that H&R's move to release CompuServe may be too late to achieve a profound effect.

Speaking of creating a mash-up , there was a video on YouTube (that a pesorosfr showed my class a couple of years ago) that was basically a timeline of Google taking over the world. It all seemed very possible, but unlikely at the same time. I can't remember the name of it, but is worth a look. But to the actual subject, Dan, I don't think that they are backtracaking to when the internet is bad. Actually, I don't consider the internet in the early 90 s being bad. When the internet was taking off, there was so much to be explored. You could go online and the minutes would just fly by, and there was always something awesome to be discovered. Now, about 10-15 years later, everything is becoming very boring. Much of the fun has been taken out of the internet as business, and politics, have been using it as a must-have' device.I think it's stupid that people running to become president have to network themselves (or have their campaign managers do the networking for them) to reach most of the American youth, as they think. But, I have to commend them for attempting to reach everyone. I'm sure that in the end, it will do more good than bad. What were we talking about again?

Prodigy's Scott Kurnit quits no. 2 post to join on-line service started by MCI

Article Abstract:

Prodigy Services Co's executive vice-president Scott Kurnit has resigned his position to lead an online joint venture at rival MCI. The departure could hurt Prodigy's turnaround efforts and could also be a sign of tension between IBM and Sears, which own Prodigy and have been in a dispute about the direction of the online service. IBM officials would like to replace the current executive from Sears who leads Prodigy with its own executive. Prodigy has been overtaken in the market by both America Online and CompuServe Inc. Kurnit will likely become president of MCI Information Services, a division that will develop Internet service access for MCI customers and create on-line information services and shopping networks.
