Charity and JIT: one can help the other

Article Abstract:

The implementation of just-in-time (JIT) systems provides managerial accountants with the opportunity to become an integral part of the management team through the use of knowledge typically deemed irrelevant to the management operations process. One such area is tax strategies, specifically charitable deductions for contributions of inventory to charity. These contributions can create substantial tax benefits that can go a long way in reducing the inventory costs associated with the implementation of a JIT system. Factors affecting the ability of a corporation to reduce inventory costs through charitable contributions include: donor intent, returned property, state income tax considerations, and federal limitations.

The requirements for MRP are: an excellent computer system, educated users, and management support. Cooperation in all functional areas is essential if the MRP information system is to work properly. Marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and accounting must fully understand their position in the information and production flow.
