Chemical (specialty)

Article Abstract:

Raw materials prices and ongoing cost reductions are expanding the operating margins at specialty chemical companies in the late 1990s. In addition, the industry is not prone to cycles, as demand for specialty chemicals does not soften with the economy. The industry is also consolidating to combat flat volume growth and mediocre pricing power. Some of these stocks are ranked favorably for 1997, but the industry is expected to underperform the market.

Chemical (specialty)

Article Abstract:

Specialty chemicals companies may be good investments over the long term, but through 1998 the outlook for many companies in this industry is not compelling. Pricing of basic chemicals is expected to ease in the coming years, and this is expected to cause specialty chemical manufacturers' profit margins to expand. However, many sectors in this industry continue to show weakness, and this may result in more consolidations of weak operations.

Chemical (specialty)

Article Abstract:

The specialty chemical industry contains a varied group of companies which usually perform well at the end of the business cycle. Most companies in this market take commodity products and process them into specific applications, which makes raw material prices account for a large portion of operating costs. Companies in this industry are expected to report better earnings in 1998 and 1999.
