Coal/alternate energy industry

Article Abstract:

Demand for coal is expected to increase by 3.3% in 1998 according to Dept of Energy estimates, compared to 1.1% for 1997, due to decreases in nuclear power and gas-fired generation and higher electricity demand. Earnings at Zeigler Coal Handling Co have been flat in 1997, but CalEnergy Co and AES Corp have both planned to expand internationally. These stocks are untimely for 1997 and 1998 and risky in an uncertain and cyclical energy market.

Coal/alternate energy industry

Article Abstract:

The coal and alternate energy industry has become untimely in 1998 and stock prices for these companies have decreased since Nov 1997 for CalEnergy Co and Zeigler Coal Holding Co. AES Corp has done quite well in the same time period, however, and its international expansion is expected to continue, while Zeigler Coal is up for sale again. The stock of AES is the only independent power producer which is recommended for investment.

Coal/alternate energy industry

Article Abstract:

Stocks in the coal and alternate energy industry have become timely in the late 1990s, but there are only three remaining, due to consolidation in the industry. Consolidation has continued in the coal and energy markets, and there are opportunities in the overseas markets worldwide. All three stocks in this sector are timely and are expected to outperform the market in 1997 and 1998, and for the next three to five years as well.
