Companies offer a new service to back up files

Article Abstract:

Atrieva's Atrieva and Connected Online's Connected Online Backup are backup software that contain drawbacks that become apparent. Both Windows 95- and NT-compatible products are more logical for data storage instead of system information, since users can wait as long as two hours before restoring a file through a modem. The Connected software, which also features a Windows 3.1 version, can save some backup time by transmitting only the changes between a current file and the backup file's last version. The technique also can produce errors and delays while reorganizing the information. Atrieva customers can back up two machines for one fee, which allows a different machine to retrieve individual files over the Web. Atrieva charges $14.95 a month, while Connected Online Backup costs $19.95 a month. Both products offer a free 30-day trial period.

Caution for babes in Disney's woods

Article Abstract:

The Daily Blast is Disney's Web site for children ages three to 12 years old. The service costs $4.95 a month or $39.95 for an entire year, in addition to basic Internet access charges. The Daily Blast provides children with numerous activities such as shooting games for adolescents and shape-matching games for toddlers. Online, animated comic books are available on the site, including the four page Duckburg's Day of Peril, which features Gyro Gearloose and takes seven minutes to page through. A free birthday gift is offered to children, however children who take advantage of the offer are led to the home page of Toys R Us, rather than a page within the Disney site. Daily Blast does not provide links out side of the Disney site, except for commercials and advertisements.

Computerized translations: ok, but not parfait

Article Abstract:

Transparent Language's $50 Easy Translator is a software program that translates Web pages from English into German, Spanish and French or from any of those languages into English. The program is easy to install, and after choosing a language for the user interface, the user can proceed to the Web browser. The translation engine, on the other hand, is only 60% to 70% accurate, by the company's own admission. The Easy Translator attempts to translate more than just words, it breaks down the dialogue into parts of speech and and sentence structure. The program works with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Netscape's Navigator and two Mosaic versions. However, it can only be configure to work with a single browser at a time.
