Compaq, Microsoft enter pact aimed at taking the hassle out of using PCs

Article Abstract:

Compaq and Microsoft Corp announce a new technology-sharing pact, saying they want to make microcomputers easier to install and use. The two companies will co-develop mobile and pen-based computers and 'plug-and-play' desktop computers. Microsoft Chmn Bill Gates wants customers to be able to plug in a microcomputer and immediately begin working on it, without having to load software or install extra parts. Gates also wants customers to be able to upgrade their machines without having to open them up. Such ease-of-use has long been a hallmark of Apple's Macintosh family. The first products of the alliance may ship as early as fall 1993. Analysts welcome the alliance, but say it may be a while before it bears fruit.

Compaq says computer market in North America faces slowdown

Article Abstract:

Compaq reports that although the computer market is slowing in the US, its own growth is staying constant. The company expects second-half growth in the North American computer market to be flat, contrasting the previous year's record growth. Computer sales in North America for the first half of the year increased by 40 percent but are expected to be up only 15 percent by the end of the year. Compaq expects the sluggish growth to naturally follow the extraordinary computer sales of the previous year. The company continues to gain market share in the sluggish economic climate, however. Compaq expects to report 1993 sales of $6 to $7 billion, which would top 1992 sales of $4.1 billion.
