3-week delay in opening up Internet name registration

Article Abstract:

Conflict continues between Network Solutions Inc., the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and critics of the government's efforts to end Network's monopoly and Icann's refusal to hold public board meetings and its plan to levy a $1-a-year fee on all domain names registered. At issue are who gets rights to Network's data base on who owns over five million registered domain names, and how much competitors entering the business must pay Network to manage the central registry. If Network Solutions refuses to reach an accord, the Commerce Department and Icann could find another firm to take over the services, but this could cause a split in the root of the Internet, or various other serious problems for computer users on the Internet.

Internet oversight board adopts new rules on domain names

Article Abstract:

In Chile, there is a conference to attempt to settle the dispute over Internet domain names. Unfortunately, 'cybersquatters' who buy domain names and then sell them to the highest bidder, will obviously favor the large, well-established corporations over small businesses and start-ups. The new regulation that will be discussed is that all contract for domain names will include a policy that will require any trademark disputes to have mandatory trials. This required arbitration will require the loser to pay the fees of the trial.
