Controlling the Growing Paperwork Flood

Article Abstract:

Optical Character Readers (OCR) are replacing mechanical duplication due to versatility and cost-effectiveness. OCRs can read documents produced on typewriters into word processors, thus freeing word processors for editing. The readers make possible interaction between many types of machines. The Hendrix OCR from Sigma Data Corporation is compatible with most word processors and operates at two lines per second. The Totec To 5000 from Mitsui is an economically-priced reader. Alpha Word III from Delairco is programmable and scans 200 pages per hour. Kurzweils' Omnifont OCR Scanner reads all print and has a processor with 128K RAM, a graph terminal and hard disk.
