Converting to a central financial database

Article Abstract:

Scientific-Atlanta Inc. has successfully converted to a central financial and reporting database system that connects its many divisions. This database replaces the electronics company's range of mainframe systems that were designed to satisfy the requirements of the individual manufacturing or distribution business. Management realized that a software system that could function as a repository for information from all divisions was needed to transform the database structure of the company. After careful examination of what are available in the market, management ultimately settled on IMRS Micro Control which not only met the criteria but also boasted additional features. The software is globally supported, less support-intensive than other products, and possesses an executive information add-on feature. As a result of its implementation, financial reporting has become faster, more accurate and less tedious.

Leveraging the data warehouse

Article Abstract:

A data warehouse is defined as a collection center that is used as a depository of enterprise-wide information. It consolidates data from legacy applications, orders them into information that complies with accepted business definitions and makes the information accessible for analysis, decisionmaking and policy setting. Business users are thereby able to analyze the data, conduct scenario modeling and produce reports from a business perspective. For chief financial officers (CFOs), this provides an opportunity to restructure important business information at an enterprise level to be used by organizational decisionmakers. CFOs must therefore actively promote the development of a data warehouse. They should be committed to the success of the warehouse and supply the needed human and budgetary resources for the duration of the project.
