Cuban jets shoot down two U.S. civilian planes; downing prompts sanctions

Article Abstract:

Two planes from the Brothers to the Rescue organization were shot down near Cuba on Feb 24, 1996. The pilots of the planes knowingly violated Cuban airspace, but were not warned by the fighter pilots of an impending attack. Cuba previously said action would be taken if airspace violations occurred.

House passes illegal immigration bill

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives approved a bill to make illegal immigration less attractive by not allowing children of illegal immigrants to get a public education and not granting temporary visas to foreign farm workers, while broadening the powers of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Cuba-U.S. immigration talks held

Article Abstract:

US and Cuban officials met in New York, NY, Jan 18-19, 1995, to discuss implementation of the Sep 1994, immigration agreement signed between the two countries. In that accord, the US had agreed to accept 20,000 legal immigrants, if Cuba took measures to stop the exodus of illegal refugees.
