Currency traders' computers improve, offering instant forecasts of markets

Article Abstract:

Traders in the foreign exchange markets utilize enhanced computer systems and software packages that provide instantaneous forecasts and market updates. The systems predict currency exchange rates and provide trading advice. Advances in mathematics and computer theory allow the new systems to provide current information. Midland Bank PLC, a London-based bank, utilizes a system from Olsen & Associates. The Olsen software sells for $5,770 and is the first commercial system of its kind. The system uses 'chaos' theory, a new mathematical technique, to discern patterns in complex events. While traders at Midland Bank find the Olsen package useful, but not without problems. Some advice given by the system, if followed, would result in small losses. Additionally, when market conditions are widely variable, the systems become less reliable. Other companies, such as Siemens AG, are also marketing forecasting systems for currency trading.

Cable & Wireless explores future based on multimedia; U.K. phone company sees itself as global distributor of others' innovations

Article Abstract:

Cable and Wireless PLC is planning to play a unique role in the global telecommunications market, as its global distributor of multimedia services. The new move is a risky one, considering the immaturity of the multimedia market. Cable and Wireless maintains that it is taking very cautious steps toward the market, and will remain as a distributor of such services and not an inventor. Cable and Wireless is planning on having a hand in the high-end multimedia market, where telecommunications, computers and video will be merged into one. Cable and Wireless is attempting to thwart its main rival, British Telecommunications PLC, which has recently signed a $4.3 billion pact with MCI Communications.
