Damage to large facility may prolong phone problems

Article Abstract:

One of the largest telecommunications facilities in Manhattan was damaged by the destruction of the World Trade Center buildings. Phone calls in and out of New York City continue to have problems due to damaged equipment and the exceptionally high volume of calls. Cellular-site damage also disrupted wireless service for Verizon Communications Inc. and other wireless providers. Almost all other local and long-distance carriers that provide service in lower Manhattan have experienced problems, but phone service outside lower Manhattan is slowly returning to normal.
