Demographic diversity in decision-making groups: the experiences of women and people of color

Article Abstract:

In this article we propose a theoretical model of the dynamics underlying the experiences of women and people of color in demographically diverse decision-making groups. Based upon the framework provided by the model, we then describe the different roles women and people of color may experience in these groups, and we examine the dynamics by which their roles may change over time. Finally, we discuss implications for future research and management practice. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Diagnosis related groups: product line management within hospitals

Article Abstract:

Identifying salient characteristics by patient type is necessary to determine optimal sets of services, termed 'Diagnosis Related Groups', that a hospital can offers. This utilization of manufacturing firms' product management techniques by hospital administrators can be effective in both reducing overall medical care costs and developing services with a ready market. Management by diagnosis related group allows hospitals to operate more effectively and efficiently.

The big freeze

Article Abstract:

The approach used by three employers in controlling medical costs is described. Manu-Tronics Inc and the City and County of Kenosha formed a coalition that asked a healthcare provider to put a long-term freeze on its prices in exchange for a long-term service contract. The deal, however, which stands to bring the employers more than $10 million in savings over a seven-year period, is yet to be clinched.
