Determinants of increasing R&D complexity in affiliates of manufacturing multinational corporations in the UK

Article Abstract:

The changes in the complexities of R&D efforts in UK subsidiaries of multinational corporations were investigated over a five-year period. Sixty-four companies were compared based on sales volume, decision making autonomy regarding personnel management, sensitivity to the requirements of the sister subsidiaries in new product development, heterogeneity of the subsidiary's markets, and the extent of control function localization. Results indicated that the mother company's R&D strategy with regards to its subsidiary may be accurately assessed through the model and its five strategic factors.

UK biotechnology: institutional linkages, technology transfer and the role of intermediaries

Article Abstract:

A close working relationship between public-sector research institutions and business organizations is a major characteristic of biotechnology in the UK. The linkage between the public and private sectors account for the four main institutional actors, namely, sponsors, hosts, users and intermediaries, in the system for technology transfer in the country. In particular, intermediaries act as agents between institutions in an imperfect knowledge market, liase between firms sourcing for external know-how and provide access to assets for developing technologies internally.
