Digital projectors use flashes of light to paint a movie

Article Abstract:

On June 18, George Lucas' Lucasfilm is expected to screen "The Phantom Menace" in four theaters using digital projectors. These filmless projectors will receive satellite-generated images that will be shown on screen. Digital projection is accomplished by using light flashes beamed through thousands of micromirror devices used to create full-color images. Digital projectors are currently being used in some post-production studios as well as in private screening rooms. Digital Projection, a firm that makes projection systems, is currently planning to introduce a new model that will have 1.3 million mirrors in each of its micromirror devices.

With plenty of shine and spin, CD's weave tapestries of data

Article Abstract:

The compact disc is a laminate of clear plastic, reflective film and dye. During playback, a laser tracks a spiral from the center of the disc, transmitting by mirrors the message in the dye layer. If the dye is opaque that indicates one state, if transparent, the second state. This binary or digital information is sent to a detector, then a processor, where it is converted into video or sound. One CD can hold 650 MB of data. Flaws or scratches in the clear plastic outer layer sometimes translate into skips or dropouts, because the laser misreads a clear spot in the dye as being opaque.
