Don't give up the chase

Article Abstract:

Verifying employment references can be difficult because former employers are often hesitant to give out employee information to avoid legal problems. Companies may be held liable for releasing information that may be considered by the courts as defamatory. On the other hand, they may also be held liable for not giving out enough employee information, especially if the former employees were terminated for dangerous conduct. Such legal considerations compel many firms to be conservative in answering inquiries about ex-employees, often restricting themselves to confirming only dates of employment, title and salary. Despite these difficulties, employers should not forgo the reference checking process because serious mistakes in hiring can adversely affect a company's profitability and may even threaten its survival. Recommendations for conducting an effective reference check are offered.

Making a move

Article Abstract:

An accountant who currently works for a major international retail company as assistant controller is considering a move to a more challenging job. The accountant is interested in industries other than retailing, and is particularly drawn to the idea of joining a start-up technology company that aspires to go public. While many companies look for accountants that are experienced in their particular industries, there are also companies that may be interested in the basic accounting and management skills that the accountant has developed in the retail industry. The accountant is advised to focus on current skills that are transferable and considered important in any business setting, such as ambition and the ability to work with a team. To improve the chances of moving into the high-technology sector, it is recommended that the accountant develop sufficient knowledge in this area.

Article Abstract:

Reference checks of an applicant's work history allow the employer to screen the applicant's former duties, areas of strength and weaknesses and personality. It is advisable to obtain written permission from the applicant to check his references. Getting in touch by phone allows one to perceive a tone of assurance or lack of it. Between eight o'clock and nine o'clock in the morning and five o'clock in the afternoon are the best times of the day to phone referrences. Face-to-face meetings can furnish more information through body language.
