Effects of generalism and niche overlap on network linkages among youth service agencies

Article Abstract:

From one theoretical perspective, exchange, dissimilar organizations link together because they must acquire needed resources from each other. From another perspective, homophily, similar organizations link together to cooperate. We examined predictions based on both perspectives concerning the effects of generalism and niche overlap on interorganizational linkages among 46 youth service agencies. Generalism and niche overlap were measured for clients, services, and funding. The results support the argument that similar organizations link more than the argument that dissimilar organizations link and suggest that homophily is an important determinant of interorganizational networks. Institutional determinants of individual mobility: bringing the professions back in

Article Abstract:

In this research, we developed and tested a theory of institutional effects on the timing of resignation in accounting. The institutional effects examined are credentialing processes. We found that the interaction of certification requirements and job duties affected early-career resignation rates of accounting firm employees. Auditors in all certification jurisdictions studied and nonauditors in jurisdictions with broadly focused experience requirements postponed resignation until after the completion of the requirement. Characterizing environmental variation

Article Abstract:

A hypothesized relationship between environmental variation and organizational actions is central to organization theory. This study shows that conventional summary measures of instability do not capture all dimensions of environmental variation. This problem is addressed with frequency, amplitude, and predictability measures that characterize the pattern of environmental variation. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
