Evaluating QFD's use in US firms as a process for developing products

Article Abstract:

Implementation of quality function deployment (QFD) is studied in 35 projects in US firms. Results show the use of QFD methods have minor, short-term effects on product development and have the potential for longer-term improvement. Firms which netted significant improvement in product development due to QFD have two things in common. They treated people and information as investments, spending time and money for the improvement of working conditions. The orientation of goals also tended to be affective.
