Farm subsidy overhaul passes Senate

Article Abstract:

The Senate passed a Republican-sponsored farm subsidy reform bill on Feb 7, 1996, by a vote of 64-32. The bill would give farmers fixed payments instead of subsidies for not growing certain crops. It would phase out government support over seven years. The bill also refunded food stamps.

Clinton signs farm-subsidy overhaul

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton signed the Freedom to Farm Act on Apr 4, 1996, a bill that will phase out farm subsidies and price supports in seven years. The bill is expected to reduce federal spending by $2 billion. Nutrition and environmental protection provisions were also part of the bill.

Clinton signs NAFTA supplemental agreements

Article Abstract:

The supplemental NAFTA agreements that Pres Bill Clinton signed on Sep 14, 1993, included provisions to improve labor standards, improve environmental standards and protect businesses from import surges caused by the removal of trade barriers.
