Will FedEx shift from moving boxes to bytes?

Article Abstract:

FedEx has been reinventing itself behind the scenes for the last two years and the first obvious evidence of that could be before December 1, 1998, as international air freight is flown by outsourced airlines. With or without a pilots' strike, the company is moving from moving packages to moving information, such as the information as to how to track a package electronically. The Memphis firm has 1,500 programmers writing more code than any other non-software company.

UPS earnings increased 37% in 4th quarter

Article Abstract:

Still comparing results to the Teamsters strike of 1997, UPS had a 4th quarter earnings increase of 37%. The increase has been steady since the 15-day shutdown. Package volume was up in 1998 from 3.04 billion to 3.14 billion, but 4th quarter volume was still 1% below the pre-strike level. The company's efforts at making its overseas unit more efficient and profitable have produced good results, particularly in Europe.
