Federal trial of L.A. officers in King beating begins

The selection of the jury in the federal trial of four white Los Angeles, CA, police officers accused of beating black motorist Rodney King began Feb 3, 1993, in Los Angeles. The four officers, earlier found innocent of criminal wrongdoing, have been charged with violating King's civil rights.

Riots broke out in Los Angeles, CA, between April 30-May 4, 1992, following the acquittal of police officers in the Rodney King case. Police and troops were called in to restore order, although the police response drew criticism. International, political and juror reactions are described.

Riots erupt in Los Angeles after acquittal of white police officers in black motorist's videotaped beating

Article Abstract:

Four Los Angeles, CA, police officers were acquitted on April 29, 1992, of all but one charge in the beating of Rodney King. Looting and violence erupted in the south-central section of the city within several hours. A state of emergency was declared by Mayor Tom Bradley.
