Filling the Gap

Article Abstract:

There is a large gap between price and performance in computers. Supercomputers can run as high as fourteen billion dollars and are usually found in government funded research centers. Pay less and you get less, the superminicomputer which is 1-100 as fast. A big range exists between the two, currently the minisuper-computer is being introduced which is not much more costly but is twenty times more powerful than the supermini. Scientific Computer Systems is developing a minisuper, the SCS-40, costing about 500,000 and being available in 1986. Convex Computers is also developing the Convex C-1 Supermini in the same price range. Minisupers are still slower than the Cray, a supercomputer, but the gap is narrower. Drawings of seven different types of computers and a photograph of the inventor of the Convex C-1 are included.
