Finance stocks lift their market profile

Article Abstract:

The price indexes for banking and insurance industry stocks more than doubled between Jan 1, 1995 and Dec 31, 1997. These gains have been the result of interest rate declines. Additional significant price gains could take place during 1998 if the Asian economic decline causes the Reserve Bank to lower interest rates. The gap between Australian and US financial sector valuations is reaching record levels.

Property and debt markets grow closer as bank finance dwindles

Article Abstract:

Australia's property financing industry in the 1990s is much different from what it was 10 years ago. Banks have shifted much of the risk onto institutional investors and the equity market. Developers are responsible for pre-commitments and pre-sales, lowering speculation. Also, a larger portion of financing comes from investors due to fewer government bond issues.
