Pam Prinz Stewart: IMA president 1998-99

Article Abstract:

Institute of Management Accountants's (IMA) president for 1998-99 Pam Prinz Stewart believes that accountants have been inaccurately typecast as nerds in movies and expresses hope that Hollywood will soon portray accountants as the daring and fun-loving individuals they truly are. She cites the many changes in the role of accountants including their increased involvement in strategic planning and project teams of various departments. She says that IMA will help accounting professionals cope with these changes by expanding the topics covered in its publications and educational programs. Moreover, the IMA will begin offering education programs on the Internet in 3rd qtr 1998 and hands-on programs at learning centers and universities. She also announced plans to improve the IMA's student program.

GASP: generally accepted speaking principles

Article Abstract:

There are ten principles that public speakers should adhere to when giving speeches, covering a wide variety of contingencies which include: using humor, using anecdotes, and maintaining eye contact. When using humor, speakers should avoid using other people's jokes, and should not start out a speech with a joke. Instead, speakers should make sure that humor is relevant to the theme of their speech. Speakers should also maintain eye contact in order to involve audiences with a speech and to increase audience empathy with a speaker. The use of anecdotes reveals the truth behind a speech's point and serves to dramatize messages. Additionally, the language of a speech should be characterized by clarity, economy, and elegance.
