Foreign telecommunications industry

Article Abstract:

American and British telecommunications companies are expected to benefit most by the February, 1997 decision of the World Trade Organization to open up and liberalize the global telecommunications market in 68 countries on January 1, 1998. Many U.S. and British telecommunication companies have already experienced long-distance telephone competition and lowering of rates, have acquired stakes or acquisitions in foreign companies and have developed marketing plans. Niche operators and companies with high growth potential should be able to participate in the $600 billion market expected by the year 2000.

Foreign telecommunications industry

Article Abstract:

The majority of the European telecommunications industry's markets were opened to competition as of Jan 1, 1998, and most other markets worldwide will be competitive by the year 2000. The Latin American and Asian areas are still the emerging markets for long-term growth opportunities with their low rate of telecommunications penetration. However, there is uncertainty for investors through 2000-2002 from competition and the Asian economic crisis.

Foreign telecommunications industry

Article Abstract:

Joint ventures and global alliances have been flourishing in the foreign telecommunications industry as part of its response to market openings. There are also attractive long-term growth opportunities in the Asian and Latin American markets, compared to Europe and the US, with their low rates of fixed-line penetration. There are a number of stocks with three-to-five year growth potential in this industry, although few are timely in 1997.
