Article Abstract:

Control of telecommunications goods and services has shifted away from the distributor to the consumer with the introduction of deregulation and a competitive marketplace. Many telecommunications companies have bercome more global with freer markets and consumer demand for paging, telecommuting, the Internet, and E-mail is having an effect on the equipment sector. Investors need to be aware of volatility in what has become a growth industry.

The breakdown of technological, geographical, and regulatory barriers has made consolidation the major trend within the foreign telecommunications industry in the 1990s. Volatility has been one result of this activity and the industry has become more timely for investors with increased stock price performance expected through mid-1999. Prospects for equipment makers and the industry as a whole are good for the next several years.
