Despite objections by some business groups, a Democrats' spokesman said the business community has not been able to deal with the complex issues of consumption tax legislation and has now allowed the government to finish the bill. The government claims lobbying has been ineffective, while business groups such as ACCI and Business Coalition for Tax Reform have been continually active. At the core of the bill is food taxation. Groups are split over whether to tax all or only some foods.

Industry told to be consistent in lobbying; pre-budget submissions are now dealt with by the Treasury, but it is hard to tell what effect they have

Article Abstract:

The process of preparing submissions for business group budgets has been made more difficult because of changes that have been made. The Treasury now handles pre-budget submissions directly. Before, the Economic Planning and Advisory Committee collected pre-budget submissions. The more formal process has been made more informal because of several factors, including the fact that the parties are more concerned with other matters, such as tax reform.
