Get well soon

Article Abstract:

Employee wellness programs have a positive effect in a company since healthy employees are vital for industrial productivity. Program planning involves adequate assessment of employees' health status and needs; and forming a committee composed of members from all levels of the company. Wellness programs may be informational and participatory and should be tailor-made to meet the health needs of employees and the company budget. Acceptance of such programs is a long term goal and assessment of absenteeism, healthcare costs and medical benefits will determine its success.

Safe keeping

Article Abstract:

Companies must comply with the standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in keeping records of injuries and illness sustained while at work. Except for companies where the chance of injury is slim, all those with 10 employees and over are required to maintain records of workplace injuries. Presented are the basic requirements of OSHA. The penalty for noncompliance with OSHA standards has recently been raised to $70,000 per willful violation.

A get-tough approach can pose pitfalls

Article Abstract:

E.A. Miller Inc tries to reduce its health care costs by penalizing workers who have bad health habits, which it can do because its health plan is self-funded. Still there are legal risks involved with trying to impose non-workplace behaviour, such as discriminating against smokers.
