Hip advertisers bypass Madison Avenue when they need cutting-edge Web sites

Article Abstract:

Dimension X is one of a new breed of advertising companies that lack traditional experience in marketing and offer valuable technological expertise instead. Dimension X was chosen by Fox for the development of its Simpsons Web site, which is based on an innovative 3D design platform and Dimension X's superior understanding of the TV program. The comparatively inexpensive nature of Web advertising has led a great number of organizations to use the Web for marketing, and those Web sites that are able to quickly command user interest are most likely to succeed. Capturing user attention generally requires a combination of eye-catching graphics and video with compelling audio and text. Traditional advertising firms are not technologically proficient enough to challenge the Web upstarts.

Infonautics Inc. stock surge spawns doubts

Article Abstract:

Infonautics's shares have nearly quadrupled since Feb 1998, but some investors wonder if the on-line reference service has gotten ahead of itself. Wayne, PA-based Infonautics leaped from around $2 per share in mid-Feb 1998 to as high as $7.9375 on Apr 17, 1998, on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Interest has surged following the recent appointment of CEO Van Morris, as well as deals with America Online and Wired Ventures' Wired Digital subsidiary, which provides the HotBot search engine. Losses continue at Infonautics, with a 1st qtr 1998 setback of $4.7 million, or 49 cents a share. By comparison, 1997 losses totaled $17.4 million, or $1.83 a share. The on-line reference service will lose $1.65 a share in 1998, according to Hambrecht & Quist.
