How Net is becoming more like television to draw advertisers; rather than clicking pages, users view 'channels' broadcast to the desktop; selling pants on PointCast
Article Abstract:
The Internet's World Wide Web is being transformed into a broadcast medium much like television. The Web has traditionally offered an environment where users travel through vast quantities of data 'pulling' whatever information they wish. The Web will now provide customized information that is 'pushed' directly to the PC, likely replacing Web browsers with channel selectors. The revised structure of the Web will also supply advertisers with the predictable audience they demand. The pioneer Web-site operator offering this type of broadcasting service is the PointCast Network. PointCast's programming and advertising is delivered directly to desktop computers over the Internet. While both Microsoft and Netscape plan to deliver Internet broadcasts over users' main desktop screens, Microsoft and PointCast have signed an agreement licensing PointCast as the initial screen on Microsoft's Active Desktop.

SBC Communications loses Dorman to PointCast
Article Abstract:
PointCast intends to name SBC Communications Executive Vice Pres David W. Dorman as its pres and CEO. Dorman formerly led Pacific Telesis Group's Pacific Bell subsidiary, until it was acquired by SBC in 1996. PointCast is a Silicon Valley push technology company that claims 1.2 million regular customers. The hiring would continue a start-up trend of attracting renowned corporate leaders with the promise of profits when the company goes public. Dorman declined to specify the PointCast offer but said it contained significant equity in the company and the promise of an IPO. Dorman, who was recruited by corporate headhunter David Beirne, earned $1.3 million in salary and bonus in 1996. Among the challenges facing Dorman are distinguishing PointCast in the Internet advertising revenues market and specializing in specific industry information.
