Human resource management under institutional constraints: the case of Germany

Article Abstract:

Human resources management (HRM) techniques are analyzed in 16 case studies of banks and chemical companies operating in Germany. In contrast to US and UK firms that operate in countries where labor market institutions are relatively weak, these German companies conduct business in a country with strong institutional constraints. Results show that the institutional environment of the German system encourages particular HRM practices while inhibiting others.
