Article Abstract:

IBM agrees to sell notebook computers to Hitachi Ltd, which will resell the machines in Japan under the Hitachi label. IBM will begin selling 2,000 or more of its computers a month, starting in Apr 1992. IBM has recently signed similar original equipment manufacturing (OEM) agreements with other companies: minicomputers and mainframes will be sold to Mitsubishi Electric Corp; and mainframes will be sold to NEC Corp. According to IBM Chmn John Akers, IBM aims to increase its OEM business as part of its planned restructuring. Akers wants to increase IBM's OEM business from its current $1 billion level to about $3 billion by 1993.

Sony to supply Apple Computer with portable PCs

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp agrees to make portable computers for Apple Computer Inc. The agreement is reported in Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the Japanese business newspaper. Apple Computer will not comment, and a spokeswoman for Sony will not say whether Sony plans to make laptop-sized or notebook-sized machines. Apple, which recently agreed to cooperate with IBM, is apparently shifting further away from the company's traditional proprietary strategy. The new agreement will benefit Sony, which has had only a small presence in the computer business. Apple will benefit because of Sony's strength in miniaturization.
