In a spin: high-performance business units are being freed and floated, benefiting their parent companies and investors

Article Abstract:

Australian companies can achieve higher returns on shareholders' funds through spinning off high-performing business units or divisions. Most of the spin-off companies have outperformed or matched the performance of their parent firms in terms of share price, thus benefiting the parent companies and investors.

BHP steel on completing first year announced that it would change its name to BlueScope steel. Being a newly listed company, it has given investors many reasons to believe in management, one of them being its achievement of a maiden net profit of 452 million dollars.
