Industrial restructuring and the promotion of small enterprise clusters: the case of the shipbuilding and repair industry in the Republic of Croatia

Article Abstract:

The restructuring of the shipbuilding industry in the Primorska-Goranska region in Croatia and its impact on the creation of small-scale enterprise clusters were examined. The survey focused on the ability and willingness of large corporations to help in the development of small enterprise clusters as part of their restructuring programs. Results showed that hidden exports, unavailability of inputs and import dependence were the primary reasons for supporting cluster creation in the region while non-payment of suppliers, short-termism and other factors hindered the process.

Owner and founder is fired by his brother and a partner

Article Abstract:

Family ties do not necessarily hold a business together. A company's founder, a 40% stockholder, was fired when his brother, also a 40% stockholder, joined forces with a third partner, a 20% stockholder. The founder could have protected himself through an employment contract, a buy-sell agreement, or a deferred-compensation plan. After hiring a lawyer, he eventually received $480,000 for his 40% stake.
