Influencing a supplier using delivery windows: its effect on the variance of flow time and on-time delivery

Article Abstract:

Delivery windows have been suggested as a tool for attaining timely delivery of the products purchased from suppliers. A relatively simple model, which demonstrates that delivery windows do not always enhance delivery timeliness, is presented. An examination of the impact of buyer-specified delivery windows on the supplier's flow-time variance, inventory, expected tardiness and probability of on-time delivery, showed that even though delivery windows may decrease variance of flow time, actual delivery timeliness may not be enhanced.

Simulation analysis of a manufacturing supply chain

Article Abstract:

A simulation model that presents a close approximation of actual data on manufacturing supply chains was employed using data from automobile supply chains. The model has the advantage of not needing many of the assumptions often required by analytical models. Findings revealed that when batching operations are in series, coordinating their schedules is essential if excessive inventory is to be averted. There is also a need for an effective forecast generation methodology to be employed in combination with kanban systems.

Planned lead times in multistage systems

Article Abstract:

Planned lead times proved to be highly influential in the customer service levels of a multistage manufacturing firm. Simulation of various operating environments revealed that slight increases in tight planned lead times result to enhancement of an organization's customer service. On the other hand, short planned lead times tend to negatively affect customer service whenever tight due dates are introduced.
