Is Career More Salient for Men Than for Women?: An Empirical Investigation

Article Abstract:

Career salience for members of dual career families was examined. A psychological model comprised of general and situation-specific self esteem, job involvement, competence and education level was developed from the literature. A sample of career family members associated with several Bombay organizations was drawn for the study. No significant difference was found in the mean career salience scores for men or women. It was found that planning for a dual career family life style prior to marriage and self esteem derived from the workplace had a significant influence on career salience of the spouses of dual career families.
