From bombs to bird songs

Article Abstract:

America's grassland birds are consistently declining, mainly due to the loss of some 99% of the tallgrass prairies that existed before the arrival of the first European settlers. The 55,000-acre Jefferson Proving Ground, an army ammunition testing facility that closed in 1995, is the largest unfragmented grassland in Indiana and has, since its closure, become an important refuge for many grassland bird and plant species. The army and the US Fish and Wildlife Service recognize the importance of the area and have formed a partnership to manage and enhance its wildlife resources.
