Among the nation's schoolchildren, there is a booming and puzzling market for key chains

Article Abstract:

Key chains have become hot items for the back-to-school crowd, taking toy manufacturers and entertainment industry executives by surprise. Returning students are sporting them on their backpacks. They like the looks and the sounds that they make when they jangle together. Basic Fun Inc. and Fun 4 All Corp. are among the companies taking advantage of this new trend. Even though most children have a maximum of two keys, backpacks across the nation are being decorated with six to eight different key chains.
