Japanese Premier Tomiichi Murayama and Pres Clinton conferred on Jan 11, 1995, in Washington DC. They discussed such issues as the trade gap and dismantling North Korea's nuclear reactors. The two leaders downplayed the significance of a recent trade dispute between the two nations.

Pres Clinton and Japanese Premier Miyazawa met to discuss the trade imbalance between the US and Japan on Apr 16, 1993, in Washington, DC. Clinton favored a managed trade policy, which would create market-share objectives for foreign firms in Japan.
