Lights go out in research labs

Article Abstract:

A change in Australian tax laws in 1996 has resulted in major decreases in research and development spending by Australia's major corporations. Research and development spending had increased to an average of 16% of annual corporate spending between 1990 and 1996. Spending decreased by 5% in 1996 and another 3% in 1997. Spending is expected to decrease by 23% in 1998.

The CSIRO crack-up

Article Abstract:

A confidential report by Allen Consulting Group, circulated last year and obtained by BRW, revealed the present structure of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and questioned the organization's commercial viability. It was found that almost all CSIRO's research projects were unprofitable.

The cleverish country: the Australian business sector is not pulling its weight in the increasing competitive world of R&D

Article Abstract:

The spending on research and development by the Australian business sector is examined. Its spending is compared with the global marketplace and the results are presented. It is found that unlike other research-minded nations, only half of Australia's R&D spending was by the business sector.
