Limits on foreign investment in U.S. firm prompts German pledge to sell Deutsche Telekom stake

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning Deutsche Telekom's efforts to merge with VoiceStream are examined, focusing on efforts by US legislators to block the merger. Topics include Sen Fritz Ernest Hollings attempt to strip US regulators of the power to waive a law requiring no foreign telecommunications companies own more than 25% of a US company; and other economic developments related to the North American Free Trade Agreement, such as Mexico's antidumping case against the US regarding high fructose corn syrup, and the United Parcel Service's $155 mil suit against Canada.

Issues concerning the responsibilities of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States under the Exon-Florio provision of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, which is aimed at protecting industries vital to US national security from being acquired by foreign entities, are examined. Topics include plans by the Netherlands company ASM Lithography Holding NV to acquire the Silicon Valley Group and Germany's Deutche Telekom to acquire VoiceStream Wireless.

Bush appeals to House GOP on trade

President George Bush is asking Republican legislators to work to get him enough votes to pass a bill granting him fast track trade negotiation power. Disagreements between House Republicans and Democrats have delayed the bill.
