Small breaks for small businesses

Article Abstract:

Falling interest rates in Australia are causing banks to offer financial services and loans to the substantial but overlooked small business sector. Competition for small business loans has led to a cash-rate margin reduction from 5.1% in June 1997 to 4.1% in December 1998. The average interest rate for a small business loan secured by a home is 6.95%, only 0.45% greater than a housing loan. ANZ Bank has offered two new products: the business mortgage loan with 100% offset and the business saver, at 6.5% interest.

Ostriches come home to roost

Article Abstract:

The Wallco Ostrich Corp. promised investors a low-risk, high gains ostrich breeding scheme, but the company collapsed when the price of ostrich products did. Wallco owes creditors about $13-19 million. In 1995, a pair of ostriches may have been worth at least $50,000, but in 1999, a pair might fetch $1000-10,000. In 1997, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission ordered the withdrawal of Wallco's prospectus.
