Unashamedly greedy for success

Article Abstract:

Powerlan, the information technology services provider founded by Theo Baker, is expanding rapidly and expects to list on the Australian Stock exchange in 1999. A float would enhance Powerlan's image and provide it with better acquisition power. Baker has been talking with Internet companies that are potential acquisitions. In 1998-99, the company expects a turnover of more than $60 million, compared with $49 million in 1997-98. Early decisions to retain earnings allowed Powerlan to fund its growth and accept $1 million and $2 million orders.

Diverse tactics beat a big freeze

Article Abstract:

Simon Earthrowl, managing director of Refrigerated Warehouses of Australia (RWA), learned the value of diversification when trouble struck his refrigerated-warehousing business. After spending $1 million for facility renovation and borrowing another $1 million to double in size, RWA lost four tenants at once, all in the meat industry. As a result, RWA had to cut 70% of the leased areas business. RWA now has only a 20% meat exposure and has diversified into storing poultry and meat replacements. The occupancy rate is now 88%.

Virtual monitoring gets real

Article Abstract:

Poor financial management spelled the end of instrumentation company Amlab in 1998, but it has resurfaced as Amlab Technology. In 1996, Ron Hoolahan joined the board of Amblab and later with partners negotiated with the receiver to buy the company's assets for $400,000. Amlab Technology loses about $100,000 a year but is now focusing less on research and more on products for one or two vertical markets.
