Lot splitting in unbalanced production systems

Article Abstract:

The impact of lot splitting in unbalanced production systems is examined under different experimental conditions. To this end, scheduling policies for use in the presence of a long-term bottleneck have been developed and tested. Findings show that shop effectiveness improves when steps are taken at nonbottleneck work centers to take advantage of capacity imbalances by increasing the number of setups and hence, the range of products being developed. In addition, scheduling policies that tend to increase the size of the average process batch hinder the overlapping of operations.

Master production rescheduling policy in capacity-constrained just-in-time make-to-stock environments

Article Abstract:

Computer simulations were carried out to assess the performance of different rescheduling policies in just-in-time, capacity-constrained make-to-stock manufacturing. Specifically, the effectiveness of the level loading, front loading and back loading methods of rescheduling rate-based master production schedules were evaluated with respect to average finished goods inventory, a schedule instability criteria and total units of sales lost.
