F.C.C. staff says SBC-Ameritech merger is not in the public interest

Article Abstract:

The Federal Communications Commission has concluded that the planned merger of SBC Communications Inc. and Ameritech Corp., two local phone services providers, is not in the public interest. No restrictions were suggested that would terminate the deal at at this point. The two companies have already divested themselves of overlapping cellular telephone operations to meet previous government objections. F.C.C. investigators will continue to work in order to define to the two companies what concessions are required for approval.
