Speakers at the Meetings Industry Association of Australia Annual Conference told of how conferences and conventions are no longer primarily about fun or relaxation but have become major tools by which companies can market themselves and promote themselves. Net Ventures business development director Michael Page told of how Australian firms are lagging behding US firms in using the Internet to hold meetings, much to their disadvantage, as videoconferencing is a highly effective tool.

Policies hit tourism, organisers claim

Article Abstract:

Speakers at the Meetings Industry Association of Australia (MIAA) Annual Conference told of how the Australian tourist industry has been adversely affected by poor decision making by the Australian federal government. MIAA National Pres Roslyn McLeod says that Australia will lose significant conventions and meetings in 2002, which will hurt not only the tourist industry but ancillary businesses as well.

How to save the tourist industry

Article Abstract:

There are several ways that Australia can save its tourist industry. Visa rules should change, time-share restrictions should end, new airline regulations should be implemented and Australian Tourist Commission funding should increase. The tourist industry employs 8% of the working population and provides approximately 6.9% of the gross domestic product.
