Maid's hanging in Singapore protested

Article Abstract:

Flor Contemplacion was convicted of killing a four-year-old Singapore boy and a Filipina maid in 1991, and sentenced to die by hanging. New evidence in the case that allegedly proved her innocence was ignored. Filipinos protested publicly to the case once Contemplacion was hanged.

Romulo resigned after being pressured to do so by Philipping Pres Fidel Ramos on Apr 17, 1995. Romulo and other government officials are being criticized for failing to protect Flo Contemplacion, who was executed in Singapore for murdering two people. She may have been innocent.

French unions stage massive rallies; welfare reform package protested

Article Abstract:

A general strike by many of France's public-service sector workers disrupted much of the country in Nov 1995 and Dec 1995. The strike was over proposed welfare reforms, which would require workers to work more and receive less benefits. Negotiation efforts were not successful.
